Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are nurses who have completed additional education and training. This allows nurse practitioners to assess, diagnosis and treat various illnesses. Nurse practitioners are able to order blood work, diagnostic imaging and can prescribe medications.

Nurse practitioners work independently - meaning they don't need to work under a physician, but instead are "autonomous practitioners". There may be times when a nurse practitioner may refer you to another healthcare provider such as a physician however, if there are situations that are outside of the NPs scope of practice, knowledge or experience.

Working with a nurse practitioner for mental health support can look many different ways - including counselling, holistic health interventions, assessment / diagnosis, and medication management.
